The Complete List of ingredients for Nite-Lite:

Ginkgo Biloba (Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Ginkgoaceae) - Although this is a common tree in Asia, and now used ornamentally in American suburbs, it was not known in the West until the 17th century. The secret of its believed powers lies in its leaves, as was first discovered by the Chinese some 5,000 years ago and later confirmed by western science. Quite interestingly is the fact that the Ginkgo Biloba tree is the longest surviving tree on earth, its genus being over 200 million years old, and an individual tree may live to be 1000 years old. Towering over 100 feet in the air and having a diameter of 4 feet, many have called this magisterial tree the "tree of life."Historically, it is known to reduce feverish body warmth, provide brain nutrients which possibly aid in memory processing and mental clarity while preserving function in the elderly, possibly because of its powerful antioxidant activity, and providing resistance against deterioration by increasing nutritional supplies to the important energy centers within the body. It is said to have particular properties which may help and complement the body's natural ability to strengthen the cardiovascular system, neutralize free radical damage, aid in the elimination of toxins and wastes, and prevent water retention in delicate tissue areas, reduce common annoyances associated with breathing while protecting the delicate areas within our bodies that help us take up oxygen, while promoting the oxygenation of the cells as well. This herb/tree is now the most popular in all of China and Europe.Science has finally discovered why the Ginkgo Biloba tree has been so useful throughout the ages. It's been found that the tree actually produces a series of natural flavonoids which may aid in the body's ability to heal itself and decrease unwanted disruption. Also included within the components of Ginkgo are isorhamnetin, proanthocyanidins (powerful antioxidants), terpenes, carotenoids and superoxide dismutase (SOD, yet another powerful antioxidant), increasing its cerebro-protective effects and the efficiencies of brain energy metabolism while elevating pyruvate and lowering lactate concentrations. Ginkgo also exhibits remarkable neurotransmitter modulating activity, and can therefore be effective in counteracting aging of the brain and may even be useful for preventing and treating senility, Alzheimer's/dementia, depression, memory loss, tinnitus, arterial insufficiency in the limbs, all of which grow more threatening every day we age.The Ginkgo tree quite amazingly produces rare substances called Ginkgolides, substances which science has discovered prevent the inappropriate clotting of blood. Ginkgolides interfere with the ability of the blood platelets to prematurely start the clotting process known as the platelet activating factor, or PAT for short. It is this same clotting factor that is known to be one of the components which prematurely and wrongly triggers allergic inflammation and toxic shock in immune dysfunction. Ginkgolides also are thought to aid the body's inhibition of the defense system. The Ginkgolides are reportedly known to inhibit this reaction effectively, as was reported in the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet, 1987. Lastly, Ginkgo extracts have demonstrated usefulness in the treatment of male arterial erectile dysfunction, directly causing sure increases in flow of blood in both arteries and veins, without any threatening change in blood pressure. After 6 months of treatment, 95% demonstrated improvement, 50% tested regained potency. Also used as a Homeopathic or used simply as a micro-nutritional for hypertension and problems with blood circulation. (Homeopathic potencies accredit their strength and efficacy to the electromagnetic signatures of the original substrate; these are scientifically created dilutions and succussions of medicines such that generally not even a molecule of the original substrate or medicine is present in the medicine). As a Homeopathic or used simply as a micro-nutritional, it has demonstrated effectiveness against the following symptomology: general uneasiness and sensation of oppression; -heaviness of frontal region of head; vertigo; sense of fullness within the head; -buzzing and sensation of blockage in ears; -pressive precordial pain and pain along the sternum with lameness of left arm (Julian).

C (Vitamin C, Vit C, L-Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbic Aci) - Ascorbic acid, Mol Wt. 176, related chemically to sugars, is a well known vitamin that is thought to be essential for the maintenance of connective tissues. Without ascorbic acid, the structure of the connective tissue becomes weakened, the linings of blood vessels, as well as the sheath of connective tissue about them, become weakened so that bleeding occurs. It is involved in the hydroxylation of proline to hydroxyproline, an important step in the synthesis of collagen, healthy bones and cartilage. Thus, it is integral to the promotion of healthy eyes, gums and teeth, critically essential in the healing and repair of wounds and damaged cells. It is also involved in the hydroxylation of tryptophan to 5-HTP, the immediate precursor to serotonin, and the conversion of 3,4-dihdrooxyphenylethylamine to norepinephrine, and the hydroxylation of p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate to homogentisic acid in the catabolic pathway of tyrosine. Vitamin C and its esters have been shown to lower cholesterol levels in atherosclerotic patients, and is involved in the formation of hemoglobin, the absorption of iron from the body. Tissues which have the highest rate of metabolic activity also have the highest amounts of vitamin C. Useful in complementing the body's immune system in times of stress and illness as well as necessary in maintaining optimum health.Vitamin C, when used in conjunction with bioflavonoids, is thought to help in the reduction of the formation of "age-spots." Vitamin C may aid the body in stopping the skin's pigment from prematurely clumping and being acted upon by the sun's ultraviolet rays, circumventing the possibility of the clumps from being turned into age-spots. Vitamin C is thought to aid the body, strengthen capillaries and avoid easy bruising, and the formation of those tiny hemorrhages of capillaries that become spider veins. As a cofactor, Vitamin C also helps the oil-secreting glands function properly, keeping the skin from drying out. Further, this vitamin may also be helpful in keeping hair from getting tangled, matted, snarled and broken. There are 6 stable esters of vitamin C, all of which prove useful in the body. These include: Vitamin C1-Ascorbic Acid, VItamin C2-Dehyroascorbic Acid, Vitamin C3-Ascorbyl Palmitate, VItamin C4-Calcium Ascorbate, Vitamin C5-Isoascorbic Acid, Vitamin C6-Calcium Isoascorbate, and lastly, Ascorbign, or provitamin C (the direct precursor of ascorbic acid) is also useful and appears to potentiate, if not accelerate, vitamin C activity.

Niacinamide (B3)

B-6 (Vitamin B6-Pyridoxine, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B6) - This is a vitamin that aids the body in the metabolism of protein and fat by participating actively in many chemical reactions (more than a 100 enzyme reactions) of protein and amino acid synthesis and degradation. It also helps with normal brain function, and the formation of red blood cells. Vitamin B-6 may help maintain chemical balance among body fluids while promoting healthy eyes, tongue and nervous system. Vitamin B-6 is thought to be especially helpful in aiding the body in preventing cracks at mouth corners, skin breakouts, and other stress-related skin problems. The lack of B6 will reduce the formation of niacin from tryptophan and can cause homocysteinuria and oxaluria that may have serious consequences. Indeed, B6 deficiency results in an increased formation of stones (calcium oxalate) in the kidneys and/or throughout the urinary tract system and the retention of homocystine in the blood, contributing to the development of atherosclerosis (cardiovascular disease). Results of a recent meta-analysis in Oxford, England at the Radcliffe Infirmary demonstrated that Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid (and to a lesser extend Vitamin B6, whose presence is necessary to convert homocysteine to the amino acid L-cysteine) were necessary vitamins involved in the body's cleansing process called methylation, wherein dangerous homocysteine levels are reduced. Lowering homocysteine levels has indicated a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 30%-40% (BMJ, 316(7135):894-898, March1998).

B-5 (Vitamin B5-Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B5, Vit.) - This vitamin, also important in protecting the body against stress, aids the body in the release of energy from food. Vitamin B-5, when used in conjunction with vitamin B-6 and vitamin C, assists the body in the relief of a runny and stuffed-up nose.Of external benefit, this vitamin is commonly used in shampoos and conditioners because it's believed to thicken and repair damaged hair. When utilized with PABA, folic acid and L-Cysteine, it may help restore color to gray hair.

Arginine (L-Arginine, Arg) - Arginine, in its common "L-" form, L-Arginine, is an essential amino acid to children, and relatively essential to adults. Arginine is secreted by the anterior pituitary glands and is known to aid in the stimulation and release of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) from the pituitary. When HGH is released into our system, the body may then care for itself, building muscle mass and strengthening bones, utilizing fat stores for energy by being involved in insulin production, and strengthening sperm count. Arginine is rapidly interconverted with ornithine, yet another HGH releaser.

Ornithine (L-Ornithine) - Ornithine, or L-Ornithine in its natural form, is an important amino acid known to be a very powerful stimulator of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) by the pituitary gland. Ornithine is thought to nutritionally increase body rates of fat uses and enhances transportation of amino acids to cells. In its biochemical free form, it is also partially involved in the detoxifying of bodily fluids of ammonia in the urea cycle.Like the amino acid arginine, ornithine is found to be nutritionally useful in helping the body promote the growth of muscle and other tissue, strengthening the body's natural defense system and possibly nutritionally increasing the motility in human sperm, although this remains unproven. Interestingly, low ornithine levels in blood plasma have been found in individuals with growth defects. Ornithine and arginine are rapidly inter-converted within the normally functioning body, and supplementation for athletes has been found to be of considerable value.

Boron (Boron Chelate, Boron Amino Acid Chelate, Bo) - A mineral, (Element No. 5, At.Wt. 11) generally mined from borax, having great significance in the ability to retain and add bone tissue. Recently Boron was found to be quintessential to healthy bone structure, its presence being necessary for bone to be protected against calcium leeching as well as to potentiate the regeneration of primal bone material. The US Dept. of Agriculture has demonstrated in 1981 that women especially are in need of this mineral, suggesting that Boron, in combination with a good diet and exercise, could be a good preventative against osteoporosis (a disease of bone degeneration). It has been found that as little as 3 mg. of Boron per day is optimum for healthy bones and teeth. This recommendation has been made to the FDA but nothing since has been done about it.

5-HTP (5 Hydroxy-L-Tryptophan)

Magnesium Gluconate

OptiZinc (zincmonomethione) - An antioxidant made by the InterHealth Co. in California, the same company that makes ChromeMate & ActiVin. OptiZinc has demonstrated synergistic effects with other antioxidants, far surpassing the abilities of common vitamin antioxidants such as vitamin A, E, and C. The antioxidant power of OptiZinc has been confirmed in multiple university-based studies. It also helps glutathione reserves in the body, as well as possibly reduce homocysteine levels because of its molecular configuration.

Choline (Choline Bitartrate) - A trimethyl amino ethanol, Mol.Wt. 121, which occurs in biological tissues in the free form and as a component of certain phospholipids such as lecithins, plasmogens and sphingomyelins, important in the genesis and regeneration of neurological tissues. It displays a synergistic entity with the B vitamins in fat metabolism, cellular communication and is an essential precursor and component to acetylcholine, the major memory molecule of the brain, and key activator of nervous tissue throughout the central nervous system. Choline also acts as important source of labile methyl groups (-CH3). Although it can be synthesized by the body, it is yet certain whether the body can make all that it needs. It is generally found in most foods including egg yolks, whole grains, beef liver, legumes.

Fructus bardenae (Nu Pong) - This particular herb, or fruit of herb, has long been used in China and throughout Asia to stimulate the energy centers within the body, increasing the body's running rate and ridding the body of sluggishness, as well as providing some rest from prolonged poor health. In so doing, inappropriate materials stored within the body and insulated from normal processing are eradicated and weight reduction is possible.

Ginkgo Biloba (Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Ginkgoaceae) - Although this is a common tree in Asia, and now used ornamentally in American suburbs, it was not known in the West until the 17th century. Melatonin - Melatonin is known to be the sleep inducing hormone of the body. Without sufficient supplies of melatonin, the body is unable to sleep normally or restfully. Melatonin has proven effective in cases of insomnia, and provides for a safe, restful and uninterrupted sleep. It is effective in small doses (larger dosages than 2 mg per day seem to be counterproductive in the general population), and generally more so when taken in combination with other relaxants, such as 5-HTP, calming herbs, calcium etc. Despite Melatonin's notoriety as a sleep enhancer, it's actually more important than just that. Melatonin appears to be able to set the body clock, making sure the natural rhythms of the body (circadian rhythms) are well adjusted to the cycles of the sun. Being so connected, Melatonin works within the pineal gland (where information about the amount and degree of sun light we are experiencing is processed) of the brain as well as within the hypothalamus (where the autonomic nervous system is controlled and serotonin levels are balanced). Helping in the control of our circadian rhythms not only makes it a great candidate for resolving the problems of jet-lag, but keeps us healthy as well! Melatonin is also thought to be involved in the aging and information-cycling mechanisms of the cells of the body, and thus indirectly affects the Immune system, helping to protect against illness and disease. The body is able to naturally make Melatonin from another very important neurotransmitter/hormone called Serotonin, it being only two steps away chemically (Serotonin is the precursor). Because of the relationship between serotonin and Melatonin, the body's need, or inability, to make Melatonin may hamper the integrity of Serotonin molecular populations, and thus cause certain forms of depression, notably seasonal affect disorder (SAD), where lack of sunlight received through the retinas of eyes causes notable drops in serotonin levels via pineal-hypothalamic gland interaction. It is known that Melatonin can increase one's sensitivity to light, thus perhaps improving upon the efficiency of processing the light, regardless of the amount received, by the pineal-hypothalamus, and thereby encouraging higher levels of serotonin. However, simply by ensuring appropriate Melatonin reserves alone has not demonstrated significant relief from SAD to date. It appears that Melatonin by itself is only one of the factors which must be considered when examining the causes of depression and creating ways in which to increase serotonin levels. Also, some caution should be taken when using Melatonin since high dosages of Melatonin used indiscriminately for the long term can induce sensitivity to sunlight. V„xa formulas effectively compensate for this fact, and thus may be taken over the long term without difficulty. Herbs found naturally containing Melatonin include, St. John's Wort, Feverfew, and Huang-qin.
