The History of CLA

In the past, most people received good, healthy doses of CLA in their diets through the consumption of beef and dairy fats. However, during modern times the way cattle are raised has changed. This change as well as the drastic changes in most people's diets today has lowered the amount of CLA people get from in their diet.

The vast majority of cattle no longer graze in pastures on natural grass and other food, but are fed processed grains and other meat by products! This results in a decrease in cattle's internal production of conjugated linoleic acid, meaning less CLA is consumed from eating meat and dairy products. Additionally, Most people concerned with cholesterol and fat intake adjust their diets to eat less red meat and dairy products. This reduces the amount of CLA even more from the average diet.

Fortunately, scientists developed a process to convert the linoleic acid of pure safflower oil into conjugated linoleic acid. Because of the changes in cattle production listed above it has become difficult for a person to obtain an optimal level of CLA in their diet without excess consumption of foods that are high in fat and cholesterol. The solution is Tonalin® CLA, a Conjugated Linoleic Acid dietary supplement available right now.

CLA was first discovered in 1987 by researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. This discovery of CLA resulted in nine years of experiments by Michael Pariza, PhD. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1978, Dr. Pariza first noted an extract in beef that appeared to be an anitcarcinogenic. In 1987, he identified this extract as CLA. With this identification, came a surge of scientific studies and research on how CLA affects body mass and other beneficial effects on human health.

Extensive research is now showing CLA to play an important role as a multi-beneficial health promoter. More than 200 studies worldwide are indicating that CLA may help reduce the incidence of breast cancer, improve asthma, allergy control, and blood sugar control (diabetes), and limit the extent of atherosclerosis which can lead to heart disease.
